Smokovje

Smokovje ("fig place") is a farming hill village on the slope above Stara Luka, 150–250 m higher than the quay, where smallholders keep olives, vines, figs and sheep on dry-stone terraces. The harbour road climbs from Stara Luka to its lower edge.

How it grew

Families built in clusters over generations: a house, then a side wing around a small courtyard (dvor), then a son's house against the gable. Lanes grew between the clusters and follow the ground; they bend, widen at a workyard or a bench, and pinch between a ruin and a shed. There is no spring, so every house and the square keep cisterns.

Landmarks

The village temple with a preslica, a raised west gable with two bell openings, 12 m above the floor: the classic landmark of a Dalmatian or Istrian hamlet. It keeps no cross or saint imagery.

The cooper's workyard and courtyard, and the ruin with the fig.
The bunja (a round dry-stone field hut) on the hidden route through the terraces.

The first ten minutes (Level 01)

Along the harbour road → the threshing floor and the first vista → the inn at the village's edge → up a ramp under the oaks → the cooper's workyard → through his courtyard → up the steps, where the preslica is revealed → the square. A hidden route through the olive terraces and the konoba family's courtyard rewards the curious.

The inn question

The inn bld_inn_02 was first designed as Smokovje's roadside inn at its lower edge. The Stara Luka town plan (rev 3) moves the same inn onto the Stara Luka riva as Konoba Kod Frane. See Open questions.

Status

Smokovje was the first level (Level 01), parked on 2026-09-27 with its fix list when the work moved to Stara Luka.
