Regional styles (A, B, C)

Island 1 is built in three regional styles. Every building in one settlement shares one style, so each town reads as one place built by one community.

Style A: Dalmatian/Istrian (the coast)

  • Grey-white limestone, dressed quoins, unglazed openings with solid shutters.
  • The balatura (an outside stone stair to the upper door), the konoba (a ground-floor cellar for wine and oil), and suhozid (dry-stone walls).
  • From Istria: carved stone window and door surrounds, stone balconies on consoles, a bell tower on the square, škrlje stone-slab roofs on older and rural buildings beside barrel tiles, and round dry-stone field huts (kažun).
  • Used by: Stara Luka, Smokovje, Pržina.

Style B: Italian/Provençal (the interior)

  • Ochre and warm lime render over rubble, pergolas and loggias.
  • Used by: Valponte and its old cemetery.

Style C: the combined recipe

One fixed recipe: A below, B above. - Style A limestone for the ground floor, plinth, full-height quoins and the door and window surrounds. - Muted, sun-bleached ochre render on the upper floors. - Barrel-tile roofs only; arcades only as stone arches at ground level; no balatura, no upper pergola. - Used only by Gradina, the garrison on the ridge saddle.

The placement rules

  • Coastal settlements (harbours, fishing villages, villages on the slopes above the sea) are style A.
  • Inland settlements are style B.
  • Style C is only for a settlement in the transition belt between coast and interior, and only when its town plan says so.
  • One style per settlement. A building that doesn't match its settlement's style fails review.
  • Shutters: plain brown wood in every style, natural or dark-stained and weathered, never green, blue or red (director, 2026-09-24).
