Glavica Cemetery

The Glavica Cemetery (Groblje na Glavici) is Stara Luka's burial ground, walled on the crown of the Glavica around the great Octagon. It is where the party meets its first enemies: the dead have risen from their graves.

Why here

A medieval town buried its dead outside the walls, on rock no one could farm, in sight of the whole waterfront. The crown had been an Illyrian hillfort, then a Roman tomb stood on it, and after about 1340 a patrician family made that tomb theirs. The town buried its dead round it. Real echoes: Cavtat's Račić mausoleum above its riva, Vis's cemetery across the bay at Prirovo, and the reused sarcophagi of Salona.

The funeral route

  • The shore path from the town ends at the foot of the Čempresova staza, the stepped cypress walk: 22 m of steps, 3.4 m wide, between pairs of 11–13 m cypresses.
  • Halfway up is the vidikovac ("viewpoint"), a paved landing with a stone počivalo (coffin rest) where the procession sets the coffin down, a bench facing the town and a stone lamp pillar.
  • The gate: two capped stone piers and two plain wrought-iron leaves. The left hangs open; the right is ajar, with a chain and an open padlock.
  • Outside the gate stands the sexton's shed: spades, a pick, a crowbar, lime, a folded bier and a handcart. It is empty.

The terraces

Terrace What is there
Gate court (T2) an overturned bier and the sexton's dropped lantern, still lit
Chapel terrace (T3) the cemetery chapel, its door open toward the town
Stećak field (T3E) stećak-type block tombs round a clear centre (optional)
Forecourt (T4) cracked flags with grass in the joints, reused Roman sarcophagi on both sides, open graves, and the Octagon's door ajar with lamplight inside
The crown the Octagon on its podium, the family plots, four family house-tombs and the kosturnica (ossuary niche)

The chapel's olive garden lies outside the walls on the north shore, with a cistern and trough for watering the graves, benches, rosemary and iris.

Graves

All 72 burials face the sunrise (a neutral local custom): head to the WNW, feet to the ESE.

Kind Count
Ledger slabs over rock-cut graves (a carved rosette, a ship or a trade's tools) 34
Sailors' graves: ledger slabs with a carved anchor, the town's seafaring and drowned dead 6
Stećak-type block tombs (plain / gabled) 9 / 5
Plain stelae / round-topped headstones 3 / 2
Reused Roman sarcophagi (one levered open by grave-robbers, one lidless with bones) 6
Open graves (where the skeletons rise) 2
Stone-lined kerb graves (one open, with a half-risen skeleton) 2
Family house-tombs, sealed 4

No real-world religious symbols appear anywhere: no crosses, no saints; the anchor is allowed because a grave can be a sailor's.

Fights

Space Size Enemies
FS1 the gate court 13 × 13 m 3 skeleton warriors come down from the ledger rows
FS2 the chapel terrace 12.8 × 12.5 m 3, plus 1 archer on the chapel porch
FS3 the stećak field 13.5 × 13 m 4, optional; the reward is the grave-robbers' cache under a tipped stećak
FS4 the forecourt 14.5 × 16.2 m the gate-keepers: 3 climb out of the open graves, 1 heavier skeleton at the door

The rises are triggered as the party enters each space, and pulls stay within 10 m, so fights don't chain.

Life and light

Swifts over the cypresses, a cat on the ring walk, wind in the cypresses. The family's lamp glows orange in the Octagon's doorway, the one warm light on the headland; clay oil lamps burn in the tomb niches. No glowing runes, no green fog: the dead are the only supernatural sign above ground.

The first visit

  1. From the pier end, the Octagon across the harbour.
  2. The shore path to the cypress walk; the vidikovac opens the town behind the party.
  3. The gate hangs open; the sexton's shed is empty.
  4. The gate court: the bier, the lantern. FS1.
  5. The chapel terrace. FS2; the optional FS3.
  6. The forecourt: open graves, a broken sarcophagus, the door ajar. FS4.
  7. A last look at the town across the water, then through the door into the dungeon.
