The patrician family
The patrician family took the Roman Octagon as their family tomb around 1340, and cut their crypt around its foundations. Their name is not yet decided.
History
- About 1340: the family made the Roman tomb their own and set a stone pinnacle finial on its roof. They broke a stair through the Roman floor into the podium crypt and cut on down.
- 1340s to about 1600: they built a ring of barrel-vaulted galleries round the podium's foundations, with family loculi in the walls, coffins on trestles, and painted coats of arms (shapes and colours only, no text). The hall of the effigy holds the founder's raised tomb with a recumbent effigy.
- The town buried its dead around their tomb on the headland.
- A plague year: the founder's line died out. The cadet branch's chamber was walled up in a hurry; a rough patch of masonry still shows it.
- The last sexton tipped old bones down a chute into the Roman ossuary below.
The founder
The founder went further down, and struck a bargain there. What the bargain was, and with what, is Unconfirmed — awaiting the director. The plan's working default ties the founder to the source and the boss, but this is not canon.
He left the founder's hoist, a medieval shaft with an iron cage on a windlass running from the deep chamber up to the crypt's well room, and the founder's hoard of Venetian ducats and the sanctum's Illyrian silver.
Their dead
Their servants still keep the family's lamps lit; the cadet branch's dead walk in their burial clothes. See The dead of the Glavica.
Treasures
The family's silver cup and the strongroom keyring (which opens the steward's vault, with the steward's silver casket); the family silver, carried off by grave-robbers as far as the cave.
